Rosalind says, "I will continue this forever because there's no excuse not to do it. It doesn't take much time. You're in and out before you know it."
After 20 years of taking care of others, Rosalind Owen decided it was her time. For too long she had let herself go, mostly because she was too exhausted to maintain any kind of exercise routine. It had taken its toll. "I was really getting weak, and things were getting 'loose.' I was starting to look like a pear," she says. In addition, she had a heart attack a few years ago. The rehabilitation consisted of treadmill work and lifting light weights, focused on getting her heart stronger. It didn't do anything to strengthen the rest of her body. An upcoming trip to Europe spurred Rosalind into action. "I had to do something. I wanted to have a good time while I was there. I figured, it's my health, that's all I have going for me. It's time to make that investment in myself."
Rosalind started coming to The Perfect Workout's Mission Valley studio on the recommendation of her girlfriend. Within weeks, her head was clearer, her memory was better, and she was more active again. In the beginning, she says, "I didn't care how I looked. It was about how I felt." Over the next 10 months, however, her looks certainly changed. Rosalind lost 18 pounds, went from a size large to a small or medium, and got a flat stomach and a smaller waist. The slow motion strength training really helped her balance, and reconfigured her shape, giving her definition in her chest, arms, everywhere. "Before, I looked like an old lady. Now I have curves. It's great to look in the mirror and see how your body is changing. I feel younger, and people don't think I'm 71 years old." The changes were on the inside, too, as her bone mass went up, and her cholesterol dropped from 200 to around 150.
For someone who's prone to making excuses, Rosalind has never missed a session. The 20 minutes flies by, and having an attentive
personal trainer Mission Valley helps her get results that she never got at other gyms. "I like that they watch everything I'm doing and tell me what I'm doing wrong. I love the encouragement when I'm struggling. 'Last one' and 'one more' are great words to hear. I'd never do that one more if I was working out at home. It's over before I get miserable. It's wonderful."
And that trip to Europe? It was non-stop up and down stairs and lots of walking, all over Amsterdam, Prague, Nice, Monte Carlo, Venice, Florence, and Rome. Rosalind kept up the entire time, and plans to stay in great shape to do more traveling. "I'll continue doing The Perfect Workout forever," she says. "There's no excuse not to do it. You're in and out before you know it. It's kind of like brushing my teeth every day. It's something I have to do to maintain my quality of life in my senior years. It's a necessity, not a luxury."
